Two major drivers for IPGR are decreasing the energy consumption during glass-container production and increasing the glass strength. The focus in IPGR research work is especially put on increasing the competitiveness of glass-containers against other materials due to light-weight and stronger containers, increasing the efficiency of manufacturing processes due to the intelligent use and development of innovative materials, and better control of manufacturing processes due to simulation and benchmarking.

On the melting side IPGR is working on improving the energy efficiency of current melting techniques and assessing innovative new melting concepts to enable considerable energy savings. Some developments are currently evaluated for commercialization and information on this will be available soon.

IPGR is closely cooperating with the Department of Materials and Process-Technology – Glass and Composites on different research and development projects.

The research objectives in IPGR are:

Increase competiveness in- and outside container glass industry

Optimizing the product

  • Increase container strength

  • Increase container quality

  • Validate processes

  • Product simulation

Optimizing the process

  • Increase energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emission

  • Optimize glass contact materials

  • Process simulation

  • Avoid environmentally problematic substances
